Cholesterol & Testosterone Units Conversion

The units in which blood serum concentrations of lipids and testosterone are commonly expressed differ from country to country.

Many countries, including New Zealand, express these concentrations in terms of the number of molecules in a given volume). The US more commonly express them as weight in a given volume. Depending on the component being measured, the units used for molecular concentrations may be millimoles, nanomoles or picomoles per litre. Units used for weight concentrations may be milligrams, micrograms or picograms per decilitre.

[deci=tenth, milli=thousandth, micro=millionth, nano=billionth (10-9), pico=trillionth (10-12)]

The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is independent of the units.

The conversion factors for various components are as follows:

  • Total, HDL and LDL cholesterols: 1 mmol/litre = 38.6698 mg/dL

  • For triglycerides: 1 mmol/litre = 88.5740 mg/dL

  • For total testosterone: 1 nmol/litre = 28.85 ng/dL

  • For 'free' testosterone: 1 pmol/litre = 0.2885 pg/mL
